another look at Europe
O
OUR MARCH 2014 ISSUE CERTAINly gave us an insight into the European
perspectives of their electric power system. Its massive electrical system serves
more than 500 million people and generates in excess of 3,000 TWh annually
utilizing a mix of fossil, nuclear, hydro,
and an ever-increasing renewals production. The transmission grid contains
some 300,000 km of lines and cables,
while the distribution system consists of
500,000 km. The grid is presently going
through great changes dictated by the European Union's (EU) plans to fully integrate national energy markets.
In addition, the EU has set targets to
drive the continent toward a high-efficiency, low-carbon economy. Binding legislation has set climate and energy goals
for 2020 which are referred to as "20-2020" targets; a 20% reduction (from 2000)
in emissions, 20% energy from renewables, and a 20% efficiency improvement.
Significant change will be required to
achieve these targets. Financial backing by
the EU of €80 billion is being provided to
help insure that the goals are met.
In This Issue
With this as background, Chavdar Ivanov of ENTSO-E has taken the lead in
providing seven enlightening feature
articles for this issue reviewing the R&D
efforts that are both ongoing and planned
to meet the EU dictates. The articles are
quite all-inclusive beginning with a historical view of the evolution of the European grid and culminating with three
