size increases, but there are numerous
techniques used to make the exchange
efficient. The cIm offers the model partitioning approach so that you do not need
to send all data every time an exchange
occurs. In this example, the equipment
part is 7.67 mb (68% of the total amount),
the part representing the steady state is
0.97 mb, the topology part 1.82 mb, and
the solution part 0.83 mb. normally in
frequent exchanges, you would only need
to exchange the state stage hypothesis so
you would not be operating with big files.

assets more efficiently, and cope with
structural changes in the power system
business. The authors illustrate the need
for more analytic work to be performed.
This requires seamless data exchanges
that meet the requirements of different
business domains. The success stories described in this and the following articles
confirm that the Iec cIm standards have
achieved a high level of maturity and
should be deployed as a best practice to
achieve data interoperability.
The adoption of smart metering immediately presents utilities with a huge
increase in the volume of data associated
with the core function of reading meters.
The next article in the issue, "everything's Talking to each other," focuses on
this topic. In the absence of information
standards, each data-enrichment scenario
would, at worst, involve its own implementation effort to reconcile different local
representations, with no ability to reuse
artifacts from similar previous efforts. The
