having a critical role in the true integration of distributed resources with the
operation of the grid. Information exchanges are being tested in labs like the
NREL Energy Systems Integration Facility and Fraunhofer in Germany, as well
as in pioneering field installations, such
the Salt River Project in Arizona and the
evolvDSO demonstrations in Europe.
The relevant distributed energy resourcerelated use cases are being maintained as
part of an IEC use case repository, which
is an important step to be able to further
enhance IEC standards.
Talking about information exchange
and the integration of systems critical for
the functioning of our business, many
people are asking important questions
on cybersecurity. The final article, "In
the Face of Cybersecurity," discusses
how the CIM is used for cybersecurity
purposes. It is important to note that solutions created from the CIM still require
the same attention to cybersecurity as any

other solution. However, the CIM allows
for standardized definitions of message
content related to cybersecurity for the
smart grid. The CIM provides a highfidelity model of the physical electrical
grid. This article also discusses how to
maintain confidentiality and integrity
of the message data being exchanged in
messages derived from the CIM.
I would like to thank the authors for
their time and dedication to produce
the articles in this issue and to the Editorial Board of IEEE Power & Energy
Magazine for the opportunity to present this highly valuable work, with a
special acknowledgement to Editor-inChief Mel Olken for his continued support and guidance.
In conclusion, the CIM is an effective solution for many challenges! The
CIM is defined by a set of international
IEC standards! The CIM can be extended to fit your need!

More importantly, the receiver has a clear
understanding of how data from multiple
sources, spanning multiple profiles and
exchange technologies, can be readily and
unambiguously composed into a cohesive
model suitable for business analysis. In a
sense, the profiling work is a key element
enabling full interoperability.
"Enabling the Integrated Grid," the
sixth article, deals with another important
angle, the concept of interaction between
distributed resources and the power system infrastructure called the integrated
grid. The integrated grid should make it
possible for stakeholders to identify optimal architectures and the most promising
configurations, recognizing that solutions
vary with local circumstances, goals, and
interconnections. The article presents
the efforts on the smart grid architecture
model and identifies IEC 61850 and IEC
CIM standards as a key standards used
to compile needed data models and information exchange requirements, hence
