✔ customer trouble call indications from call centers, in-

teractive voice response systems, and individual users
of the ADMS
✔ confirmed as well as outage management-predicted open
protection devices associated with outage incidents
✔ dynamic crew locations
✔ background layers of information, such as aerial views,
street maps, and land-base extracts from the GIS
✔ DER locations, connectivity, and status.
Merging all of these types of information into a single
easy-to-understand view of the distribution system frees
system users from performing human data integration and
allows them to focus on safe system oversight and control,
the goal of an ADMS.

Advanced Applications and Historical
Implementation Challenges
In the distributions operations functionality pyramid shown
in Figure 2, the components of an ADMS are represented
in the top five levels. The advanced applications of network

analysis and optimization occupy the top two levels. Most
distribution utility ADMS projects implemented to date
achieve the lower three levels with SCADA, outage management, and some level of advanced network visualization
in the UI/UX. Only a few ADMS projects, however, reach
the point where the advanced applications are fully implemented and in daily use by utility operations.
As mentioned previously, the advanced applications generally fall into the category of basic distribution network
analysis or distribution network optimization. The basic distribution network analysis functions include
✔ power flow and state estimation
✔ short circuit
✔ fault location
✔ various derivatives of network analysis output, such as
operational limit monitoring/violation-reporting and
loss calculations.
These functions all attempt to simultaneously solve
a set of mathematical equations that relate a physical
description of the distribution network equipment (the
