Starting with a keynote panel featuring U.S. Department of Energy Program Managers Chris Irwin, Alejandro
Moreno, and Erika Gupta, each of the
eight sessions featured a simultaneous
broadcast to all attendees of a prerecorded panel presentation with a video
of all speakers. Immediately following
the recorded presentation was a live
web meeting discussion session. In the
web meeting, the same panelists had a
moderated talk with attendees participating by audio, video, and text messaging. Participation was high, with
each web meeting session drawing up
to 75 participants, a large number of
whom both turned on their cameras
and contributed to lively side-channel
conversations using the online chat
tool. Seven 90-min sessions followed
the keynote: " Drivers
of Change, " " Business
Models and Value Realization, " " Regulation
and Policy, " " System
Design and Architecture, " " Resilience, "
" System Implementation Strategies and
Examples, " and " Visions for Participation. " They featured
presentations and facilitated discussion.
TESC2020 also featured virtual " posters. "
Authors appeared in
recorded 5-min videos
of slide presentations. The videos were
supplemented with PDFs. Tools that supported text-based question-and-answer
discussions were available throughout
the event, and during the 2-h window,
each author hosted a live web meeting
to address questions. Attendees could
pop in and out of these sessions from

experience was not the same as talking with one another the way one wanders around at an in-person venue, the
meeting successfully

Many attendees voiced
their enjoyment of the
small group breakouts
that were hosted to get
to know the authors.
As virtual conferences
are not going away, the
organizers will seek to
make more opportunities available for a
mix of formal and spontaneous small
group breakout rooms in the future.
