The Early Days:
Wind Power for
Rural Development
Poul la Cour (born 1846) was a
Danish pioneer of wind power
and a prominent figure in the
Danish enlightenment movement. His visionary idealism
would become pivotal for the
early electrification of Denmark.
La Cour constructed the first
wind turbine that produced electricity in 1891, and he imagined
how rural populations could harvest wind energy for mechanization and modernization of farming practices and for warmth and
light (Figure 1).

small electricity plants powered by wind throughout the rural parts of Denmark and thus
contributed to the early electrification of the country. In 1918,
120 wind-powered electricity
plants delivered 3% of the total
national electricity use, and as
many as 20,000-30,000 private
farms used small private wind
turbines for powering pumps,
chainsaws, grinders, threshing
machines, and so on. However, the diesel motor and, later,
electr ical motors gradually
took over.
Inspired by airplane propellers, J.  Jensen and P. Vinding designed more aerodynamic
wind turbine wings i n 1919.
