real-world residential house in Knoxville,
Tennessee, and then analyze the
deployment results, followed by concluding
remarks.
Millions of smart meters installed
worldwide are generating an enormous
amount of load profiles every day. Access
to these data creates opportunities
for power companies to better understand
their consumers' consumption
patterns. In the fifth article, " Clustering
Electricity Consumers: Challenges
and Applications for Operating Smart
Grids, " A. Alonso, E. MartÃn, A. Mateo,
F. Nogales, C. Ruiz, and A. Veiga
connect clustering methods to power
system operations. They specifically
address the aspects of efficiency, robustness,
and scalability, considering
the outliers, missing values, and the
volume of the smart meter data.
Data-driven approaches for developing
dynamic system models have
become highly relevant today for power
grids with high-penetration inverterbased
resources (IBRs) as IBR information
is proprietary. In the sixth article,
" Data-Driven Dynamic Modeling
in Power Systems, " L. Fan, Z. Miao,
S. Shah, P. Koralewicz, V. Gevorgian,
and J. Fu first review five applications
of data-driven power system dynamic
modeling. The review includes parameter
identification for generators and
loads via data and oscillation mode
analysis via phasor-measurement data,
among other applications. Furthermore,
the authors present frequencydomain
admittance IBR model identification
via data generated from
controlled experiments and challenges
in designing dynamic model structures
and deriving model parameters
for IBRs.
The issue concludes with an " In My
View " column by H. Zareipour. He reviews
a history of disruption in the power
industry since the war of currents. Considering
the push to decarbonize the
grid, he predicts that three technologies
will shape the next disruption: AI, 5G
networks, and distributed digital ledger.
The ideation of this special issue
dates back to 2018, when former Editorin-Chief
Mike Henderson was in full
support. The issue would have not come
to reality without the continuous support
from the current Editor-in-Chief Steve
Widergren and his editorial team. We
