IEEE Power & Energy Magazine - May/June 2022 - 6
History-Energy
From the Sun
Today's solar power discussions focus
on energy conversion to electricity from
photovoltaic systems and large solar radiation
collection farms. But the harnessing
of solar energy for human development
is truly a centuries-old tradition.
This month's " History " column examines
the utilization of solar energy in
early applications as context for the rise
of photovoltaic development in the present
era. The authors present the evolution
of seminal physical concepts that led to
the evolution of various types of photovoltaic
cells, with their associated virtues
and shortcomings.
Swinging Book Review
IEEE Power & Energy Magazine past
Guest Editor and article contributor Pierluigi
Mancarella provides his insights on
the book, A New Swing-Contract Design
for Wholesale Power Markets, written
by Leigh Tesfatsion. The combination of
trends in variable renewable generation,
greater electrification of load, and the
rise of intelligent, communicating energy
devices is calling for the coordination of
operational flexibility for supply-demand
balance in wholesale market design. The
book borrows on the concept of swing
options (a contract with the right to adjust
the quantity received) in commodity
trading. The author carefully applies the
concept to the flexibility needs arising in
wholesale electricity markets, considering
appropriate contract constraints.
Curtain Call
Great thanks to Guest Editors Hong
and Li for conceiving this issue and arranging
the articles. We are also grateful
to the authors who worked hard to
explain the complex concepts behind
AI and ML and educate us on the state
of the art of the technology and experiences
in power system applications.
The editorial team earned recognition
for their efforts to improve the communication
of the concepts to our broad
power and energy audience. Assistant
Editor Susan O'Bryan deserves to take a
bow for her language editing skills. This
is O'Bryan's last issue as assistant editor,
having joined the editorial team a year
and a half ago. Throughout her tenure,
she has trumpeted the cause of simple,
understandable language while enduring
the hard-to-understand terminology
that pervades the various specializations
in our industry. We wish her well in her
next phase of life.
Thanks as well to Associate Editor
Brian Johnson for overseeing the book
reviews, Associate Editor John Paserba
for his reliable and resilient management
of the " History " column, and Kristin
LaFleur and her professional team at
IEEE Publishing.
Singularity represents the point where
intelligent machines become enlightened
to control their destiny and rival human
civilization. Contemplating such a concept
is scary. As this issue shows, even
with advancements in AI, there remains
plenty of work to overcome the challenges
the field faces. For all the speed and
excitement of technological change, may
we find some comfort in that fact.
