Continue to Grow
and Improve
The priorities of PES before the pandemic
are still with us today. My job
as the secretary of PES is to keep the
records, and this keeps me informed
about most activities. I get to see the
good work from all of our technical
committees, vice presidents, regional
representatives, members at large, the
board, and the IEEE staff. All of this
work is impressive and admirable.
I have been involved with the IEEE
Power Systems Relaying Committee
for many years, and I see it and other
technical teams solving leading-edge
problems, like how to prevent and reduce
the impact of wildfires, teams developing
the new model of our electric
grid as it moves to 100% inverter-based
generation with the addition of energy
storage, and our communication and
substation teams finding ways to integrate
and interconnect all of the intelligent
devices across the grid. All of our
technical teams are engaged, committed,
and finding solutions.
Sustainability
Most of us started our relationship with
IEEE at the local level or in college.
These local chapters are important to
create a positive flow of new members.
The board takes time to discuss
the status and potential for support of
these Chapters at every board meeting.
We have created student discounts and
awards to recognize high achievement.
We send our congratulations to Region
10 for success as one of the fastestgrowing
regions.
There are tangible benefits to staying
involved with PES. Our Society
offers online resources as well as committee
meetings and conferences to
provide the venue to learn, collaborate,
and contribute. The board encourages
our members to seek elevation of their
membership to the levels of Senior
Member and Fellow as soon as each
person is ready.
What I enjoy most about IEEE is
the passion, enthusiasm, and commitment
of its Members. They believe in
this work and understand the important
role they play in making a better
and more stable system for producing
and delivering electricity. Our organization
gives people across the world opportunities
for learning, improving,
and growth. IEEE provides the tools to
help us thrive in our careers and also
gives us a chance to give back and be
involved, and I am glad that I can be a
part of the amazing PES team.
