This issue opens with " The Flexibility
of Domestic Electric Vehicle
Charging, " written by Esther Dudek.
It presents the results from one of the
largest EV demand management trials
in the world. It involved 600+ drivers,
two different smart charging systems,
and different incentive schemes. This
trial, hosted by Western Power Distribution
in the United Kingdom, shows
there is significant flexibility that can be
unlocked with clever technology. It can
be used by distribution companies to reduce
grid investments required to meet
the electrification of transportation.
The second article, " Harnessing
the Full Potential of Clean Energy, "
by Vahid Mehr, Salman Kahrobaee,
and Manuel Avendaño, shows how
Southern California Edison in the
United States is making DERs an integral
part of its strategy to achieve
California's emission goals. Different
pilots, ranging from the use of rooftop
solar photovoltaic power to energy efficiency,
energy storage, and EVs, are
demonstrating how the spectrum of
DER technologies can be incorporated
by distribution companies not only in
operation but also in planning to avoid
or defer grid investments.
" Network Congestion Management, "
by Archie Chapman, Andrew Fraser,
Laura Jones, Heather Lovell, Paul Scott,
Sylvie Thiébaux, and Gregor Verbicˇ,
presents the results of a sophisticated
trial where residential batteries were
used to decongest an undersea cable
connecting an island off the southern
coast of Tasmania, Australia. Using
forecasts, optimal power flows, and
locational marginal prices, this TasNetworks
trial shows that customer-owned
batteries can provide network support
and be rewarded appropriately.

Services From the Edge, " written
by Michael Z. Liu, Luis (Nando)
Ochoa, Shariq Riaz, Pierluigi Mancarella,
Tian Ting, Jack San, and John
Theunissen,
introduces the concept
of " operating envelopes " to enable the
provision of grid and market services
while avoiding local network impacts.

Australia, by AusNet Services, makes
it possible for a distribution company
to define active and reactive power
limits per customer. This allows aggregators
to manage their DER portfolios
without negatively affecting
network integrity. At the aggregated
level, this is instrumental in enabling
the development of a distributed energy
marketplace with the provision of
local services that also interact with
upstream markets for energy and ancillary
services.
" Aggregating Distributed Energy
Storage, " by Ning Zhang, Haiyang Jiang,
Yaowang Li, Pei Yong, Mingxuan
Li, Huan Zhu, Song Ci, and Chongqing
Kang, shows that cloud-based services
can be used to aggregate storage
from all types of DERs. Different trials
carried out in China demonstrate that
the operation of battery storage, uninterruptible
power systems, flexible
industrial loads, and thermal storage
from heating networks can be coordinated
to provide a wide spectrum of
flexibility services.
Our last article, " Bottom-Up Flexibility
in Multi-Energy Systems, " by
Regine Belhomme, Edoardo Corsetti,
Christoph Gutschi, Kris Kessels, Ana
Virag, Meysam Qadrdan, Xiandong
Xu, Hailong Li, and Jakub Jurasz,
presents trials carried out in several
European countries where flexibility
is provided from multienergy systems
(electricity, gas, heating, and cooling).
Through these practical examples, the
authors illustrate the technical requirements
for the integration of multi-energy
systems, explore the potential value
streams that can result, and discuss
how integrated energy markets may
emerge in the future.
