ELECTRICITY SYSTEMS IN EUROPE ARE EXPERIencing
major changes due to targets for renewable energy
integration, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and energy efficiency.
Different studies show that there is a growing need for
more flexibility and active stakeholder involvement at all levels
(from small consumers to pan-European networks) to ensure the
efficient and reliable operation of the electricity system, particularly
to deal with growing volumes of renewable energy sources,
from transmission-level wind and solar farms to household-level
photovoltaic generation. Other key evolutions that aim to decarbonize
the energy sector beyond electricity, such as those based
on the electrification of energy end uses (e.g., the development
of electric vehicles and the electrification of heating), are also
expected to have a substantial impact.

In this context, synergies between different energy sectors
and carriers present an opportunity to provide fl exibility
to a renewables-based electricity system while supporting
whole energy system decarbonization. Several projects that
deal with so-called multi-energy systems (MESs) have been
put forward in the past few years, with the aim of exploiting
the interactions between electricity and other energy carriers-heating,
cooling, gas, and fuels such as hydrogen-to
support a cost-effective integration of renewable energy,
enhance system fl exibility and supply security, and contribute
to more holistic energy decarbonization targets.
This article discusses major aspects of MESs, with a
focus on their potential to provide " bottom-up " fl exibility to
the electricity system and through the lens of the European
Horizon 2020 project MAGNITUDE which aims to develop
business and market mechanisms and coordination tools to
provide power system fl exibility by optimizing synergies
