our accomplishments
helping to chart a course for the future

I

In my prevIous "Leader's
Corner" column, the following concrete goals and priorities from the
Ieee power & energy society (pes)
Governing Board were identified:
1) strengthen the involvement of
industry practitioners by increasing and communicating benefits
of active participation.
2) Improve international involvement and leadership, including
awareness, technical participation, and the use of international
meetings and Chapter activities
to foster cooperation.
3) provide objective technical leadership and support for industry initiatives that lead to developing the
key regulatory policies in response
to changing industry needs.
In this column, I am pleased to talk
about some of the recent initiatives and
accomplishments, achieved through
the dedication and quality work by
volunteers and the pes staff (led by
executive director patrick ryan).
The largest exhibition in our industry, the Ieee pes T&d Conference
and exposition, is a stellar example
of overall industry and global involvement (goals #1 and #2). We had close
to 900 exhibitors and 14,000 people
attend the 2016 event, and vendors
around the world showcased their best,
state-of-the-art products, solutions,
and services, attracting large crowds
and "closing deals" in the process. To
quote nestor martinez, vice president,
sCe, with one example of positive

feedback: "The pes team did a great
job coordinating the T&d show. I can't
imagine how much work goes into organizing such a large event. The vendor floor was great, and I spent quite
a bit of time walking through the floor
and getting some leads on contractors,
products, etc."
Carl segneri, T&d show chair, and
Lance spross, chair of the Local organizing Committee and director at oncor
(the host utility), led the large team of volunteers and staff, who did an outstanding
job of making this event a huge success.
Tommy mayne (pes vp, Conferences
and meetings) will work with Carl to
make the next T&d expo in denver an
even bigger success. shay Bahramirad
(director at Comed) and amin Khodaei
(professor at the university of denver)
chaired the Technical program Committee team, which created an amazing
platform for sharing best practices and
discussing latest opportunities and challenges our industry is facing.
one of the important aspects of goal
#1 has been engaging executives to
provide awareness about the benefits
achieved by active involvement in pes.
The outstanding super sessions and panels included top industry business and
technical leaders and attracted large
audiences. Quite few sessions were
standing-room only. For example, the Ceo
roundtable provided a very lively discussion on the timely and important hot topic,
"Balancing market and reliability roles
of Isos and dsos, policy and regulatory aspects." roundtable participants
included olivier Grabette, Ceo, rTe,
France; patricia Hoffman, assistant
secretary, u.s. department of energy

(doe); and Gordon vanWelie, Ceo,
Iso new england, united states; it was
moderated by an industry guru, ralph
masiello, from Quanta. Both Gordon and
ralph emphasized how the may/June issue of IEEE Power & Energy Magazine
devoted to transactive energy provided
very valuable and insightful information
on recent industry developments.
Just before the Ceo roundtable,
patricia Hoffman and pat ryan signed
the u.s. doe and Ieee memorandum
of understanding. our joint goal is to
formalize the cooperation and address
opportunities and challenges with grid
modernization, building on the successes of the Ieee Quadrennial energy
review support and smart grid initiatives; this is an excellent example of
our goal #3. pes is the lead coordinator in cooperation with Ieee-usa (led
by veronika rabl), Ieee standards
association (led by erin spiewak and
Bill ash), Ieee smart Grid, and other
Ieee societies, focusing on four areas:
standards, technology, conferences, and
education. pes has identified Ieee cooperation structure on policy support
to develop the strategic plan and lead
the implementation processes with the
u.s. doe (coordinated by Joe paladino). This organization structure will
serve to address and respond to any
other initiatives and requests by global
regulatory, government, and other organizations (e.g., the european energy
Commission and, in the united states,
the Federal energy regulatory Commission and north american electric
reliability Corporation).
