in the technical respect but also on a
commercial and personal level. Thomas
Edison in the United States and Werner

Siemens in Germany, both highly respected entrepreneurs and inventors, had
to concede, bit by bit, to the disadvantages
of dc systems. The inventors and promoters of the novel ac were gradually gaining

ground and were well on the way to overcoming the only drawback of simple ac,
that ac motors could not start on their own.
The electric installation in the
Telluride mining district of Colorado,
commissioned in 1891, consisted of
the generation of hydropower for a remote ac motor of remarkable output, but
with complicated auxiliaries for starting.
in fact, the Westinghouse system was
merely single phase, fairly troublesome,
and was soon replaced by the two-phase
Tesla system in 1896. Nikola Tesla, then
a technical advisor to George Westinghouse, was one of the inventors of socalled "polyphase" ac systems, essential
for electric drives by means of rotating
magnetic fields. He favored the basic
arrangement with two phases, most notably for the generators in the Niagara
falls power plant commissioned in 1895.

Ocean, the Allgemeine ElektricitätsGesellschaft (AEG) in Berlin, Germany,
