A motivating factor for new adjustable-speed pumped storage
units is the need to address the impact that increasing amounts
of wind and solar photovoltaics have on grid system inertia.
In 2014, the task force hosted a session with presentations
from members of the Argonne National Laboratory team
for the DOE-sponsored Modeling and Analysis of Value of
Advanced Pumped Storage Hydropower in the United States
study project. The report is available online at the DOE (see
the "For Further Reading" section).
In 2019, the task force organized a tutorial, "Advanced
Pumped Storage Hydropower Plants," that covered technical
aspects of advanced pumped storage hydropower plants. The
tutorial consisted of four separate sessions:
✔ Session 1: An Overview of Advanced Pumped
Storage Hydropower Plants and The Roles for Adjustable-Speed Pumped Storage in the Grid of the
Future
✔ Session 2: Dynamic Performance of the Adjustable-Speed Pumped Storage Hydro, Grid Codes
Compliance, and Advancement in Hydro Power
Generation
✔ Session 3: Dynamic Modeling of Advanced Pumped
Storage, Hydro Dynamic Modeling, and Dynamic
Simulation of Renewables and Energy Storage.
✔ Session 4: Implementation of Adjustable-Speed
Pumped Storage Hydro in Japan, Experiences in Operating Advanced Pumped Storage Hydro, and Simulation of Renewables and Energy Storage.
In 2019, the task force met at the IEEE PES General Meeting in Atlanta and discussed developments in pumped storage
technology, including rotor technology. As of this writing, a
member of the task force is scheduled to participate in a panel
session on the subject of water power generation at the 2020
IEEE PES Virtual General Meeting.

CIGRE Study Committee A1 Rotating Electric
Machines, Working Group A1.34
The CIGRE Study Committee A1 Rotating Electric
Machines, Working Group A1.34 on Testing Voltage of
Doubly Fed Asynchronous Generator-Motor Rotor Windings for Pumped Storage Systems was launched in 2011. Its
purpose is to investigate the rotor winding testing voltage
of the doubly fed asynchronous generator-motor for adjustable-speed pumped storage systems and the background
of the definitions of the voltage. In September 2019, an
international tutorial and colloquium on rotating electrical
machines was presented in New Delhi, India, in conjunction with a meeting of CIGRE Study Committee A1, where
a report was presented and discussed. This was also published in the October 2019 issue of CIGRE's Electra magazine (see the "For Further Reading" section). The purpose
of this working group was to investigate the rotor winding
testing voltage of the doubly fed asynchronous generatormotor for adjustable speed pumped storage system and the
background of the definitions of the voltage.

U.S. DOE
On the subject of pumped storage, valuation, and technoeconomic assessments, in 2019, the DOE Water Power Technologies Office (WPTO) selected Argonne National Lab to
lead a multilab team to evaluate and develop comprehensive
valuation guidelines for advanced pumped storage units'
contributions to grid resiliency and reliability. With these
guidelines, it will be possible to evaluate the technical and
financial value of pumped storage units with advanced technology. The report is scheduled to be available in 2020.
