Telephones were still a major communications tool for system operation,
and Figure 5 is an early photo of the Waterside II control room with a plethora of
early telephones standing on the central

control desk as well as a telephone book
hanging at its side. By 1912, it had become apparent to New York Edison that
the existing system operator's board had
become totally inadequate, and it was
replaced by a much more sophisticated
board (see Figure 6).
For internal communications between
the two Waterside stations, a pneumatic
tube system had been installed. Its terminals can be seen both on top of the
control desk in Waterside II in Figure 5
and between the two operators in Waterside I in Figure 6. In Figure 6, a spittoon can be seen between the two men
as well.
The new system operator's board was
20 ft in length and consisted of several
hundred small rectangular slate panels
mounted in a steel framework. Scat-

tered panels of white marble were used
to indicate ties between station buses.
These panels contained over 3,000 pilot
lamps indicating closed (red) or open
(green) circuit breakers, just as in modern installations today. Power for
the operation of these lamps was obtained from a 30-V, 3000-W motorgenerator set. The lower portion of the
board contained panels representing all
of the high-voltage feeders to a total
of 73 substations, with 32 of these
rotary converter substations supplying
110/220-Vdc to customers. There were
also 14 substations supplying power to
some portions of the various electrified
passenger railroads in New York City.
The remaining 27 substations were ac
transformer substations supplying 60-Hz
power to customers. By this time, five
