The Interdisciplinary
Nature of the Smart Grid
The history of smart grid developments
in academia and industry demonstrates
the fact that, contrary to the long-held
belief by some members of our community that the smart grid discipline replaces, or supersedes, power
system engineering, the smart grid's
main focus is on devising pervasive
end-to-end data-centric command and
control technologies for the electricity grid. Such next-generation technologies help raise the electricity grid's
reliability, improve its efficiency, and
reduce its carbon footprint (e.g., through
the integration of renewable sources of
energy). As such, the smart grid dis-

regarded as a replacement for, a derivative
of, or even a next-generation version of power
system engineering.
While traditional
power system engineering deals with a
wide variety of technological and architectural issues in power
generation, transmission systems, and distribution networks, the
smart grid's focus is on
(initially) the enhancement and (eventually)
the replacement of the electricity grid's
overall command and control system,
including architecture, technologies
and algorithms. In other words, as a discipline, the smart grid simply complements the traditional power system's
command and control architecture
and methodologies. It leverages communication systems and information
technologies to create a new interdis-

technology engineers
could work side by
side with power system engineers in the
multifaceted, multidisciplinary smart grid
domain to facilitate the
transition of the current
electricity grid toward
its future smart grid.
It goes without saying that smart grid's
interdisciplinary platform is enriched with
contributions from social scientists,
business analysts, and computer scientists. From that perspective, no single
engineering discipline can claim the
ownership of the smart grid as a discipline and/or domain.
