In 2007, China commissioned its first UHV dc project.
Connecting the Xiangjiaba hydroelectric-power plant in Yun-
nan province to Shanghai, the transmission system operates
at 800 kV with a design capacity of 8 GW, spanning a dis-
tance of nearly 2,000 km. In 2009, the first UHV ac project
was commissioned. Operating at 1,000 kV, this transmission
project moves power more than 600 km from Jindongnan in
the southeast of Shanxi province to Nanyang in the Hubei
province. Since then, other UHV ac and UHV dc transmis-
sion projects came along at a rapid pace. By the end of 2018,
17 UHV dc and 11 UHV ac transmission lines had been built.
Figure 7 shows the current UHV ac and UHV dc transmis-
sion systems.
In recent years, transregional transmission lines have
played an important role in facilitating VG integration.
From 2010 to 2018, the amount of transprovincial trading
of VG power increased each year, with an average annual
growth rate of 123% (Figure 8). The proportion of VG
delivered by some lines reached more than 50%. Using
2017 as an example, the share of VG power in the total
energy moved from Xinjiang to Henan through the Tian-
zhong UHV dc line was nearly 50%. Between the prov-
inces of Gansu and Hunan, 9.04 TWh of VG power were
traded over the Qishao UHV dc line, accounting for 51% of
the total electricity delivered.

tion Revolution Strategy (2016-2030)," which set strategic
targets for medium- and long-term energy development.
According to the strategy, nonfossil energy will account
for 20% of the total primary energy consumption by 2030.
