The Niagara Falls Power Company, in
conjunction with Westinghouse Electric
& Manufacturing Company and General Electric Company, would develop
these practices over the next decade. In
some cases, these practices were a result
of serious electrical faults. Most problems were not anticipated because of
the groundbreaking nature of the work.
There was no grid. There were no "systems." There was an alternator and there
were some customers. They took what
the British call the "suck-it-and-see"
method. Frequently, it was the former.
From the 2,200-V power house bus
bars, the system was divided into three
distinct classes of service: local distribution, intermediate distribution, and
long-distance transmission (see Figure 2). The local distribution was fed
directly from the 2,200-V, two-phase,
25-Hz station bus. Note that in Figure 2,
there are no fuses or circuit breakers
shown. In 1896, protective devices for
transmission lines were conspicuous
by their complete absence. There was
