This new book by Dragan Jovcic provides
a valuable update to the first edition
of High Voltage Direct Current
Transmission. Jovcic is a professor
at the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen,
United Kingdom, where he has
been since 2004. He has a Ph.D. from
the University of Auckland, New Zealand.
Jovcic is a Fellow of IEEE. His
research interests include high-voltage
(HV) dc, dc grids, and control systems.
High Voltage Direct Current Transmission
provides comprehensive coverage
of HVdc transmission and in-depth
knowledge in key areas for the application
of HVdc: power electronics, control
engineering, and ac/dc power transmission
systems analysis. The application of
HVdc transmission is experiencing rapid
growth and leading to new technology developments.
This second edition provides
new material to cover these developments
with emphasis on developments going
into new field installations.
The book is divided into three major
sections. The first section covers linecommutated
converter (LCC) HVdc.

electronic circuit analysis point of
view, with chapters analyzing two-level,
three-level, and modular multilevel
converters (MMCs) applied to HVdc
systems. The second edition features
more coverage on full-bridge MMCs.
Converter interactions with ac systems
are discussed, including real and reactive
power capability diagrams and control
needs for connecting to very weak
or even passive ac systems. The section
ends with a discussion of ac and dc fault
behavior of VSC-HVdc converters.
The third section of the book covers
The first several chapters provide an
in-depth discussion of LCC-HVdc converter
topologies and behaviors from a
power electronic circuit point of view.
A later chapter discusses the harmonic
behavior of the converters and harmonic
interactions between the ac and dc
systems through the converter. The section
includes chapters presenting LCCHVdc
control schemes applied at the
converter and system levels, including
converter responses to system disturbances
such as ac and dc faults. There is
a chapter discussing the challenges and
best practice solutions for applying LCC
systems connected to weak ac systems.
The second section of the book covers
voltage source converter (VSC)
HVdc systems. The section starts with
a comparison between LCC-HVdc and
VSC-HVdc and discusses the advantages
and disadvantages of each option.
VSCs are introduced from a power
the emerging area of multiterminal dc
grids. This is a rapidly developing topic
that is moving from research to application,
and as a result, the second edition
has some significant updates. This
section introduces the basic concepts of
LCC converter-based dc grids starting
with grid topologies and system-level
control schemes. However, much of
the section discusses technologies for
VSC-based grids as that has become
the technology of choice.
This edition includes system topologies
and control schemes and adds a
discussion of dc grid master controls.
This section includes a discussion of dc/
dc converters for connecting systems at
different voltage levels and HVdc circuit
breaker technologies.
Jovcic provides many examples throughout
the book. This book is suitable for
graduate-level power engineering and
power electronics students. It also serves
as a valuable reference for researchers in
academia and engineers in the industry.
