IEEE Power & Energy Magazine - Grid Edge 2023 - 17
Electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure and technologies
are critical in accelerating EV adoption rates. A key
barrier to the rapid adoption of EVs for personal and commercial
use is access to reliable and fast charging. Today,
it takes 2-3 minutes to fill an internal combustion engine
(ICE) vehicle's fuel tank. Whereas, for an EV, depending
on the type of charger and the battery capacity of the car, it
can take hours to fully charge the battery. This has caused
significant anxiety for EV drivers. To resolve this issue, EV
owners must have access to convenient charging. This session
will focus on bringing SMEs from EV charger manufacturers
and utilities to discuss the current state of the
technology and grid, challenges, and the road ahead to meet
the upcoming EV charging demand.

Standards and Profiles for Grid Edge Interoperability
(Panel Session)

Variability within the electric grid due to an increase in
renewable energy and electrification of traditionally fossil
fuel-based loads can be mitigated through the management
of flexible loads and distributed resources. However, a lack
of interoperability and implementations of standards between
systems and these grid edge assets requires ad hoc customization,
which makes integration costly and creates barriers
to participation. This panel, which is comprised of senior
members of alliances, standards development organizations,
and interoperability experts, will discuss ongoing activities to
improve interoperability and increase the successful deployment
of grid edge assets to support the evolving smart grid.
