Grid-Forming Inverter-Supporting Grid Operations
from the Edge (Panel Session)
Session Chair: Ziang Zhang, Binghamton University
In a generator-dominated grid, inverter-based resources
(IBR) inject renewable energy into the grid as current
sources. There are no active energy resources at the grid
edge. However, with the rapid expansion of distributed
energy resources (DER) and the retirement of centralized
power plants, the future grid will have low inertia, more
variable generation, and more devices to manage. The GridForming
(GFM) technology enables the power electronics
inverters to carry out the duty of synchronous generators -
maintain the grid voltage, frequency, and synchronization.
This panel will present results from technical and industry
perspectives. The objectives are:
* Increase the awareness of Grid-Forming technology
* Share the challenges and opportunities of the GridForming
technology
* Discuss how inverters on the grid edge can support
future grid operations

Control and Operation of Next-generation DERs in
Distribution Systems (Panel Session)
Session Chair: Lina He, University of Illinois Chicago
A large number of distributed energy resources (DERs)
have been integrated into power systems, especially on
distribution levels, to meet energy demand while reducing
environmental impacts such as global climate change.
Power electronic devices are widely applied to serve as
integration interfaces to match the characteristics of DERs
with power system requirements, e.g., voltage, frequency,
active and reactive power, and harmonics. The increasing
system complexity is bringing operators new challenges in
control, protection, and operation of distribution systems.
It is, therefore, significant to provide appropriate solutions
to guide the operation of distribution systems to welcome
more DERs. This panel will share cutting-edge industrial
and academic solutions to overcome the control and operation
challenges of distribution systems.

Challenges in Achieving Net Zero Emission Targets with
Solar and Energy Storage Technologies (Panel Session)
Session Chair: Eva Wang, Total Energies
According to a recent report 1/5 of the world's 2000 largest
corporations have committed to achieving net zero emissions.
This number will increase in the next few years as
social pressure around sustainability grows and regulations
enforcing enhanced ESG reporting come into effect. To meet
net zero targets, corporations are seeking on-site solar and
storage solutions. However, achieving net zero targets with
solar and storage comes with a host of challenges including
utility tariff changes, interconnection hurdles, insufficient
grid infrastructure, policy uncertainty, etc. This panel will
discuss the critical challenges impacting widespread solar
and storage adoption and highlight the necessary solutions.
The panel will bring together perspectives from a corporate
customer, a developer, a utility representative, and a
