Vehicle-Grid Integration Planning and Operation:
Challenges and Solutions (Panel Session)
Session Chair: Honghao Zheng, ComEd
The strikingly increasing penetration of Electric Vehicles
in the second decade of 21st century propel the distribution
grid evolving towards decarbonization, decentralization
and digitalization. The technology advancement of
EV chargers, their interconnection and complex charging
behaviors bring a lot of challenges to grid planning
(e.g. load balancing, volt-var management and transformer
upgrade, etc.) and operation (e.g. demand response, V2G
and DER coordination, etc.). This panel focuses on a
variety of solutions for the V-G integration planning and
operation problems. Panelists will show how the collaboration
across the academia and industry help tackle some
of the most difficult problems and share successful field
demonstration/stories.

Microgrids and Integration of DERs:Industry Experiences,
Practical Challenges, and Future Opportunities
(Panel Session)
Session Chair: Qun Zhou Sun, University Of Central Florida
Integration of DERs to form a microgrid can improve
energy reliability and customer satisfaction. Microgrid projects
are carried out across the world. This panel is created
to share the industry experiences in designing, constructing,
commissioning, and operating real-world microgrids.
Some of the practical challenges include, sizing of energy
storage systems, communication and interoperability, cyber
security considerations, switching between grid-connected
and islanded modes. We will have speakers from utilities,
vendors, and national laboratories to share their experiences
and lessons learned.

At the Crossroads of Movement and Power: How
Electric Vehicles can Serve as a Grid Resource (Panel
Session)
Session Chair: Katherine Stainken, Electrification Coalition
At the intersection of challenges including climate change,
increasingly poor air quality, high gas prices and national
security concerns, comes the opportunity of transportation
electrification to address these challenges. With the
availability of federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure
Law to invest in electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure
and electric school buses, there has never been
a better time to understand how V2X technology will
enable an accelerated adoption of EVs and how V2X can
create a stronger and more resilient grid. This panel, consisting
of a V2G expert, utility representative, building
technologies expert, and EV specialist will shed light on
the policies necessary to take full advantage of federal
funds and deploy V2G technologies.
