Westinghouse desarrolló los motores
en serie de CA para utilizarlos en las
locomotoras eléctricas. Ahora bien,
como el motor en serie tenía una curva
del par de torsión de velocidad descendente,
se podía ralentizar hasta menos
del 50 % de la velocidad total cuando
se aplicaba la carga. Esto lo convertía
en un motor no apto para la mayoría de
los usos industriales.
Se desarrollaron otros tipos de motores
de CA, pero la mayoría tenían
algún tipo de anillo colector o conmutador.
El trabajo que presentó F. Jarvis
Patten al Instituto Estadounidense de
Ingenieros Eléctricos (AIEE) en 1889,
" Alternating Current Motors-the
Evolution of a New Type " (Motores de
corriente alterna: la evolución de un
nuevo tipo), es un ejemplo de lo extrañas
que podían llegar a ser las cosas. El
motor está compuesto por solenoides
giratorios S, que los discos de cobre estacionarios
D repelen, como se muestra
en la figura 5. La relación correcta
entre los dos campos que se determina
mediante un conmutador se muestra en
la figura 6. Al observar este diseño, es
fácil apreciar la sencillez y, en consecuencia,
la utilidad del diseño de Tesla.
Con frecuencia, cuando se necesitaba
una cifra alta de hp, la solución era
utilizar un motor síncrono. Este motor
no era más que un alternador modificado.
Era un hecho bien conocido, incluso
en los primeros días de la industria
eléctrica, que cualquier generador actuaba
como un motor cuando se le suministraba
energía. El inconveniente es
que, al tratarse de una máquina sincrónica,
no podía arrancar por sí misma.
Necesitaba algún medio externo para
ponerse en marcha.
Ninguna de las primeras propuestas
resultó ser un sustituto comercialmente
viable del motor de derivación de CC.
El motor de inducción sería ese sustituto,
con el tiempo.
Las patentes de motor
de Tesla
Con el paso de los años ha habido cierta
controversia sobre quién inventó el
motor de inducción. Nikola Tesla es
reconocido ampliamente en Estados
Unidos como el inventor, pero el italiano
Galileo Ferraris también describió
la producción de un campo magnético
giratorio con características muy similares
a las de Tesla. Otros dos europeos
reivindican conceptos similares: Mikhail
Dolivo-Dobrovolsky y Charles
Eugene Lancelot Brown. Este último
sería cofundador de Brown-Boveri.
Varios partidarios de su inventor favorito
han continuado esta controversia
hasta el día de hoy. Algunos partidarios
han demostrado tener un conocimiento
limitado de lo que es un motor de
inducción y, en consecuencia, el mismo
conocimiento limitado de lo que
lograron con exactitud Tesla u otros.
