As more renewable generation is integrated into the electric
power grid and legacy generating units are retired, utilities
are faced with a major challenge of reevaluating their planning
and operating processes. Key strategic changes have
to occur in the way utilities design and plan their transmission
and distribution systems in order to maintain security,
resilience, reliability, and stability of the electric power systems.
This panel session will discuss issues, challenges and
strategic changes that are taking place in the electric utility
industry in the planning and operations area and provide
vision and perspectives of the industry leaders and experts
on how to address these complex issues.
Corporate Engagement Program (CEP) was put together to
understand and address the changing needs of the electric
utility industry and provide technical knowledge and guidance.
The electric utility decarbonization policy is one of
such challenges which falls under the umbrella of CEP.

Implementation of Building Information Modeling Technology:
Changing the Game for Substation Design

The use of Building Information Modeling (BIM)
software and workflows is fundamentally changing the
way utilities design, construct, operate, and maintain
substations. Benefits of adopting this technology include
improved safety, reduced construction issues, and
increased quality through standardization of designs.
But utilities often face implementation challenges,
including the need to invest in new software and training
and to address issues related to change management.
A growing number of utilities have worked through the
challenges to successfully implement BIM technology, and
their stories may be useful to others. Panelists will discuss:
* Why the industry shift to BIM is important for the safe
and reliable operation of the grid moving forward
* How leveraging BIM standards can benefit your
organization
* Benefits documented by early adopters during construction,
commissioning, and operation of substations
