Increasing penetration of distributed energy resources
(DERs) in electric power distribution systems has created
the need for coordinated management of the grid's
resources. It is also driving increased interest in both
academia and industry related to new advanced applications
to manage grid resources. The need for 1) improved
operational efficiency and resilience and 2) improved
levels of controllability and observability in distribution
systems are leading to the rapid adoption of advanced
distribution management systems (ADMS).
However, bringing the next generation of ADMS
applications, smart grid hardware, and control schemes
into practice requires creating a common platform for
communication between researchers, regulators, engineers,
executives, operators, manufacturers, technicians,
and cybersecurity experts. Large-scale distribution test
feeders are needed to provide such a platform for information
exchange, knowledge sharing, and application
benchmarking. This panel will bring together experts
from academia, national labs, and industry to discuss the
changing distribution grid operational paradigm.
The panel will present evolving practices for distribution
system operations and motivate the need for synthetic distribution
feeder models with realistic operational scenarios
reflective of new and emerging paradigms. The panel will
also discuss the need for benchmarking advanced applications
for active distribution systems in a fully replicable environment.
The panel will conclude by introducing a new task
force to support the large-scale feeder development, operational
scenario generation, and application benchmarking.

The European Green Deal aims at making Europe the
first climate neutral continent in the world by 2050.
Also Nordic Countries have set ambitious climate
goals. These European and Nordic Climate Goals will
lead to a rapid electrification in the Nordic Countries,
where already many electrical vehicles and
ferries can be observed and where many large heavy

industries are decarbonizing. The need for electricity
is increasing and this leads to the increased need for
new renewable production and transmission, but also
for digitalization, flexibility solutions, sector coupling
and cyber security.
The Nordic Power System, with its large-scale hydro
power, is one of the cleaner power systems in the world
with interconnections to Europe. It is also a Power System
that has a modern Power Market and a high degree
of digitalization. The development of the Nordic Power
System is on-going with many interesting technical,
research and political questions to be answered.
