Outstanding YORK — Lee Irwin, owner of Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York, has donated to many youth outdoor functions in the past, but recently for the Izaac Walton League York Chapter #67’s Outdoor Festival in September, Lee donated more than $3,000 so that the youth fishing pond would be filled with trout, and the excess monies would be used to keep the function and the club fiscally able to conduct other activities for the youngsters. — WCO CHAD R. EYLER, YORK On the Bright Side… VENANGO — Don Shaffer from Slippery Rock told me that he was driving down a back road when he noticed an antlered deer running across a field toward his vehicle. To avoid hitting the deer he stopped his truck on the road, but as he waited for the deer to cross he temporarily lost sight of it. To his surprise, the buck jumped off the bank onto the hood of his truck. The deer then slipped onto the road, regained its footing and ran off. Still shocked, he was surprised when another buck leaped off the bank and hit the side of his truck. This buck slid under the truck and then regained its footing and ran off. As he got out of his vehicle to examine the damage, another deer came off the bank and hit his truck again. Still able to drive his truck, Don left the area. Always positive, Don told me that despite the damage to his truck, he at least knew where he was going to hunt during deer season. — WCO CLINT J. DENIKER, FRANKLIN Three Cheers for the Ladies FRANKLIN — My HTE instructors had another busy year, as they put through 330 students who now joined the ranks of our state hunters. Nearly 70 female students graduated, which is 21 percent of those attending the classes. I’m glad to see this and hope to recruit some female instructors for future classes. I want to thank all the instructors in my district for all their time and effort last year. — WCO BARRY A. LEONARD, CHAMBERSBURG For Real This Time MONTGOMERY — One young hunter I checked during small game season said, “this is the second time I was checked by you, the first was during a mock scenario at my HTE course.” It’s certainly good to see new members of the hunting community in the field. — WCO RAYMOND MADDEN, ROYERSFORD Keep Then Guessing WASHINGTON — Last fall, I attended Centerville Sportsmen’s Club Youth Mentored Pheasant Hunt. While walking out to the field behind a young man, I asked him if he was a good archery hunter. He said he was, and then I mentioned he must be because he had gotten his buck. Bewildered, he asked how I knew he got a buck. I told him you never know when a WCO is around, checking things out. I never did tell him that I knew he harvested a buck because his antlered tag was gone. — WCO RICHARD W. JOYCE, WASHINGTON GAME NEWS Shopping is Easy and Fun MERCER — My girlfriend, Missy, never considered hunting until she began dating me. With a whitetail harvest to her credit, she now is determined to get a bear.
