and a sense of humor is helpful. Keep your eyes on the end goal of hunting — and keep your receipts. A few mistake purchases are more than likely. Although not an educated buyer, I knew that if I had the appropriate gear, I would be one step closer to actually hunting a bird. At the outset, my mission to purchase turkey hunting apparel seemed very simple, until I was surrounded by it. Although similar to the amateur eye, camouflage clothing brands are very different and abundant. The varied patterns and tedious color combinations at first appear uniformly uninteresting and bland, but are necessary to blend into the turkey hunting environment. Absent are the girly-clothing street colors, or any feminine color, bright and pretty. Also absent is the size petite. I believe more women would turkey hunt if manufacturers could be convinced it did not require a 36inch inseam. In addition, the mental image of stuffing 20 inches of shirttail into a waistband void of elastic, then restuffing each time nature calls, is enough to discourage the purchase. My innocence regarding what specialized individual garments are necessary for successful hunting prolonged the selection process, and was further frustrated by the limited options in the women’s hunting clothing department. Finally, with my collection completed, a friendly face accepted my plastic money and began scanning my items at the check out. Looking for Tim, I scanned back through the store’s predominately male faces. Wanton eyes ogled the plethora of every conceivable item known to clothe, aid, entertain and educate them in their favorite outdoor sports. While lifting the 4 items from the shopping cart to the counter, and waiting for them to be totaled and bagged, I smiled inwardly as my box of turkey decoys was scanned. Looking like the real deal, the photos of these turkey look-alikes and corresponding information convincingly made them a crucial purchase. My limited acquaintance caused hesitation that the one box would be enough. The next item I placed on the counter was the “voice” that I intended to use to gather the live wild turkeys to me. Anxious to follow the package directions and use my first slate call as soon as possible, I asked the employee to bag it separately. I intended to serenade Tim with sounds of putts and clucks during the full 3-hour return drive home. Tim, now convinced of my determination by the bagged purchases, discussed with me aspects of turkey hunting, safety and wild turkey natural history, as my call’s striker scratched out a cacophony of shrieks from the new slate surface. It all sounded like beautiful music to me and seemed to duplicate exactly what I GAME NEWS
