KYLE R. SARVIS of Curwensville is the Grand Prize winner in the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s 2008 Hunter Education Youth Essay Contest. The 13-year-old received a scholarship to the Safari Club International’s “Apprentice Hunter Program” at the Indianhead Ranch in Del Rio, Texas. Kyle was recognized at the January Commission meeting, and is shown here with PGC Executive Director Carl G. Roe on the left, and Commission President Roxane Palone and Hunter Education Specialist Phil Luckenbaugh. Daniel J. Walter of Moon Township captured the First Prize, a $500 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card. Robert M. Gasior, Jr., McKees Rocks, received second place and a $300 Dick’s gift card. Jonathan M. Kershner, Fleetwood, won third place and a $200 Dick’s gift card, and Stefany C. FeKula, Danielsville, earned fourth place and a pair of Sightron S2 10 x 50 binoculars. How Can the Game Commission and I work Together for Wildlife? The sun had just come up. A ruffed grouse drummed, and songbirds chirped high in the trees. A turkey gobble exploded nearby. I raised my gun as he strutted out from behind a pine tree. Without the Pennsylvania Game Commission, I would never have been able to experience this amazing hunt. In the excitement of the hunt, we often forget how much work it takes to make Pennsylvania such a great state for wildlife. The Pennsylvania Game Commission makes and enforces hunting laws and teaches hunter-trapper education courses. They also do a lot of work to make habitat better for all Pennsylvania wildlife. There are many things I can do on my own to help wildlife too. I can do these things and enjoy being in the woods at the same time. I can plant trees and sunflowers to make habitat and food for wildlife. I can pick up trash along roads, streams and in the woods that pollutes the environment and hurts wildlife. I can make bird houses and build brush piles for rabbits to live in. I can learn more about the Pennsylvania Game Commission and wildlife by reading Pennsylvania Game News. The more I understand, the easier it will be for me to help wildlife. One last thing I can do is to teach my younger brother and cousins about wildlife and how we can all help. I took aim and fired. In a split second, the gobbler dropped. I was so excited! My heart was pounding as I jumped up and ran to claim my trophy! By doing these simple things I mentioned, I can work with the Pennsylvania Game Commission to help wildlife. Helping wildlife will make it possible for me to hunt for many years to come.
