Money Well Spent Over the years we have paid out some reward money to individuals who reported poaching through the “Turn In a Poacher” TIP line, but none was as rewarding for me as one from this past fall. WCOs were trying to put all the pieces of the puzzle together on a rather large deer poaching case, but just didn’t have that one last clue until a 13-year-old boy picked up the phone and provided the information needed to break the case. Even though he was not thinking about a reward, it was gratifying to accompany the local WCO when he presented the young lad with it. — SC LAW ENFORCEMENT SUPERVISOR TIMOTHY MARKS, HUNTINGDON Uh-Oh During an HTE class a youngster whose father was also taking the course mentioned that Dad took some game out of season. The look on the father’s face was priceless when I asked him if he wanted to share the details with the class. — LMO BRAD MYERS, DUNCANSVILLE Not Taking Orders GREENE — Prior to deer season we compile a list of families who would like a deer that we get during the season (mistake and illegal kills). Deputy Bill Lubich made an announcement at the school where he teaches asking if anyone needed deer meat and that there would be no charge for it. A little later that day a student approached him saying he wanted some jerky. Deputy Lubich quickly set him straight that he was not a butcher shop and would only get him the deer, and that it was up to him to process it. — WCO RANDY CRAGO, CARMICHAELS Where’s the Roadrunner? NORTHAMPTON — At a Sears store just north of Easton a coyote entered the main entrance through the automatic sliding glass doors and was stretched out on top of a skid of bagged salt. Sure enough, when Deputy Kevin Halbfoerster and I arrived, the coyote was still lounging around watching the shoppers come and go. If the skid would’ve been bags of Acme birdseed, I might have been able to explain to the manager why the “Wiley Coyote” ended up inside his store. — WCO BRADLEY D. KREIDER, CHERRYVILLE One and Done LAWRENCE — Deputy Ron Richman and I worked in Jefferson County on the first day of bear season, and while checking an area for bait we pushed a bear out of the laurel to an awaiting hunter who shot it with his .454 Casull revolver. We helped the hunter drag the bear out of the brush and went on our way. Throughout the course of the day while checking other hunters, they all asked if we had checked any bears. After relating the morning’s story of our “bear drive” they all seemed to think we should do the same for them. Some were disappointed when they found out we were good for only one drive per year. — WCO JEFFERY T. KENDALL, NEW CASTLE MAY 2009 Keepers of the Wetlands YORK — I would like to recognize the members of the York Chapter of Ducks Unlimited, especially Dutch Myers. Under his leadership members replaced, repaired and monitored many mallard nesting tubes and wood duck nesting boxes at Gifford Pinchot State Park, Codorus State Park and the York New Salem Game Lands. Thanks to this outstanding organization for helping to maintain and restore waterfowl populations in the county. — WCO CHAD R. EYLER, YORK 35
