Nine-year-old JOSHUA McCLEESTER with his first groundhog, taken within the guidelines of the Youth Mentored Hunting Program. The program provides opportunities for youngsters under the age of 12 to gain hunting experience and learn at an early age about Pennsylvania’s rich hunting heritage. his right elbow steadied on his other leg. I really wanted to see if Josh jerked or squeezed the trigger, but I was too intent on the groundhog. At the crack of the .22 magnum the hog slid back into its hole. Realizing I had been holding my breath, I turned to see Josh’s expression. He looked very disappointed as he cracked open the rifle. “How could I have missed?” he questioned dejectedly. But, I had seen the hog shudder and knew it was hit. I took the rifle and told him we’d go check it out. Josh tore out across the field and beat me to the hole by 30 yards. I could see him bending down intently, peering into the dark hole. He yelled, “I see it — I think I AUGUST 2009 got it!” He certainly did. I knew it had to be a head shot because that was all we could see when he fired. I poked the chuck’s head with a stick and there was no response. Reaching down, Josh eagerly helped me pull the groundhog from the hole. As I congratulated him, the biggest grin I’ve ever seen spread across his face. He said, “Wait till Dad sees this,” as he hoisted the hog as high as he could. I asked if he wanted to go back to the first field and wait for more groundhogs, but, no way, as he insisted on toting his hog the whole way home. My husband, Glenn, was just finishing up the milking as Josh burst into the barn with his prize. Glenn told Josh he had heard the shot, as Josh recounted the story over and over. Josh had to call Grammy on the phone and tell her about his hunt. I knew that from that day on Josh was hooked on the outdoors. I wished I had the opportunities available to me as a youngster that Josh now has. How many young boys and girls are involved in other sports and interests because they had to wait for their 12th birthday before they could hunt? Grab a son or daughter, niece or nephew, and get them involved in the outdoors at an early age. With the Game Commission’s Mentored Youth Hunts, the opportunities are there, and our sporting heritage depends on the next generation. A few days later I pulled the roaster from the oven. Removing the lid, there was Josh’s groundhog, basting in an orange marmalade sauce and stuffed with apples and walnuts. Sitting down at the table with sides of fresh baby red potatoes and green beans from the garden, Josh said something many of us don’t feel till adulthood, “It don’t git any better than this.” 17
