P IKE — WCOs Bob Johnson, Scott Malicky and I helped WCO Fred Merluzzi introduce an orphaned bear cub to a new mother. The cub was found in a den that had been flooded from the hard rains we received in the late winter. The den was half-filled with water and the mother nowhere to be found. WCO Malicky knew of a female denned under an abandoned house in his district that had at least two cubs of her own. The tiny cub was placed at the entrance to the den and was immediately adopted by its new mother. — WCO MARK KROPA, GREENTOWN

Stanley Cup Endeaver
WAYNE — Last winter an ice fisherman stopped by my house to let me know that a deer had wandered onto Prompton Lake and, with it being smooth as glass, could not get off the ice. As I walked out onto the ice, the deer started to panic and tried unsuccessfully to get to its feet. After a moment the deer calmed down, though, and I used my catchpole like a hockey stick and pushed the little deer over to the shore where it was able to get some traction and run off into the woods. I’m not sure what the ice fishermen were thinking while this was all happening, but I bet it was the strangest game of hockey they had ever seen. — WCO JAMES MCCARTHY, WAYMART

In the Blink of an Eye
ALLEGHENY — I recently realized that it has been two years since graduating from the Ross Leffler School of Conservation. It’s hard to believe that I’ve been working in my district for that long already. It seems like we just graduated and now the 28th Class is in session. I remember many of the instructors at the Training School saying, “You’ll wake up one day and you won’t believe that it will be time to retire.” If the past two years are any indication, it seems that may be true, as the time is really flying by. TRAINING SCHOOL — After receiving our laptop computers and getting them set up in our rooms, I turned mine on but nothing happened. After mentioning my problem to my roommate, and after some investigation, we concluded that plugging it in would have helped. — CADET ED BERRYMAN, HARRISBURG

Record Bear?
The first two days working at a bear check station can be quite hectic, but by the third day things have usually slowed down, sometimes to the point of boredom. This year on the afternoon of the third day, boredom was taking its toll, when a vehicle pulled in and backed up to the scales. We jumped up and approached the scales as the vehicle occupants exited their truck. They proudly opened the rear of their SUV and exposed a full size stuffed toy bear in the back. We all laughed and then proceeded to weigh the bear, which came out at four pounds even — the smallest bear I had ever weighed at a check station. — LMO SHAYNE A. HOACHLANDER, CORRY
