Looked Good On Paper
TRAINING SCHOOL — As part of our Effective Writing class we were instructed to pick a persuasive argument and apply it to a situation. My “argument” justified to my wife why I needed to purchase two new flintlock rifles, so my sons and I could hunt together. The following weekend we were in a sporting goods store when I told my wife about the argument I had written. The big grin on her face said it wasn’t happening. Fun and Productive
Last winter 140 volunteers worked 335 hours to help our wild pheasant restoration team with flushing surveys in the Central Susquehanna Wild Pheasant Recovery Area. Individuals traveled from as far away as Bucks and Chester counties, as well as from New Jersey, to help. Their efforts allowed us to survey many farms throughout Montour, Northumberland and Columbia counties, and to record 323 hen and rooster pheasants. This multi-day survey provided the Game Commission with valuable information we’ll use to determine the overall population of birds in the restoration area. Thanks go out to everyone who donated their time and enthusiasm to lend a hand. — LMO KEITH SANFORD, MIFFLINVILLE

No Worse for Wear
A blue jay with most of the top of its beak missing frequented my birdfeeder. I had seen this jay for several months and it seemed healthy. The bird adapted and ate seeds with not too much difficulty. Deserves the Gold
N O RT H U M B E R L A N D / M O N T O U R — I thought I was watching the Winter Olympics one day while driving in Danville. A gray squirrel was running along a powerline adjacent to the road when, all of a sudden, it sounded like someone had dropped a coconut on the roof of my vehicle. I slammed on the brakes to check the damage only to have the squirrel come rolling off my roof, do a half-pike with a triple Lutz across my hood, followed by a full gainer onto a parked car next to me, where it then catapulted itself onto a tree and disappeared. The squirrel didn’t even wait around for me to hold up its official score. It was 10s across the board. — WCO RICKY DEITERICH, DANVILLE

Better Late Than Never
WESTMORELAND — A hunter told me he got up real early for the spring gobbler season opener, meticulously had all his gear gathered to go and made the long drive to his hunting spot. When he went to load his gun when hunting hours began, though, he discovered he didn’t have any shells. He went back home disgusted with himself, got some shells, went back to his hunting area and shot a gobbler with a 10-inch beard. — WCO RODNEY ANSELL, MT. PLEASANT
