it, I did catch the legs of a bobcat walking by the camera. The first week of November I was checking my traps at daybreak on a nearby farm. Driving down the farm lane I got a glimpse of a bobcat running down the lane and into the woods. Those two sightings made me narrow my locations to those two areas. Deer season came and went, leaving me scrambling to get some last minute preparations done before setting my traps. I didn’t have waxed dirt made, so I settled on using sodium nitrate blended with my pre-sifted dirt. (For those of you not familiar with trapping, the waxed dirt or sodium nitrate blend prevents a layer of frost from forming on the dirt covering the trap.) I then set traps as soon as I could after deer season and checked them every morning before work. The traps set near my trail camera location were more than a mile into the woods. With no success by December 24, I decided to make a set where a trail crossed a path, where I had found some coyote scat. I made a flat set and spread the coyote scat, adding some lure to it. The next morning, Christmas, I slept in later than usual. I figured that it being Christmas, I would be the only one in the woods that morning. I was quite surprised when I ran into a guy walking near my first couple of sets. We exchanged some small talk and I was back in the truck and down the road to the next area. I was anxious to check my traps in this area, especially the new set. I walked into the set slowly, listening for any noise. When I rounded the corner I spotted a

bobcat in my trap. Its front left foot was held securely. I had fulfilled my goal. I called home to tell the good news. I checked and pulled my other traps until my family came out. I thanked the Lord for the ability to fulfill my goal. When my family arrived, I got some good pictures of the cat, and some much appreciated help in carrying out my trophy and equipment. Back home I weighed my trophy. It was a 32-pound male with a beautiful coat. I reported my success to the Game Commission, and called a local taxidermist to schedule an appointment. The next day I dropped the cat off at the taxidermist who commented on it being a nice bobcat. Looking back on the season, it definitely ranks as being one of my most memorable. If asked a few years ago if I would ever catch a bobcat, I would have given a definite no. But now a bobcat has been added to my list. I had a full mount done of the bobcat and have some great photos to remind me of the experience. My son will have these someday, and I hope to instill in him a love for the outdoors. I hope he’s by my side in the future to experience some great opportunities hunting and trapping in Pennsylvania.
