clucked again as I eased the safety off. He stretched his neck up to look and gave me a perfect target. The tom weighed 19 pounds, had a nearly 10-inch beard and 1-inch spurs — a nice 3-year-old tom. It was 5:10; 5:10 p.m. that is. I was hunting in the panhandle of Texas in early April 2010. For the 2010 spring gobbler hunting season, 34 states and 3 Canadian provinces allowed all-day hunting. In this part of the country, our tradition has been to hunt only in the morning. In other parts of the country, all-day hunting is taken for granted. Initially, when the states in the Northeast and MidAtlantic region opened spring gobbler hunting seasons, mid-morning to noon closures were set up to reduce the disturbance of nesting hens. The theory was that hens were more apt to move around and be flushed or mistaken for gobblers and illegally shot later in the day. That has not proven to be the case in states where all-day hunting has been in place for many years. Studies in Missouri, Virginia and West Virginia indicate that the opening date of the season is an important factor in determining the extent of illegal or accidental harvest of hens in the spring. The earlier the season opens, the more likely it is for hunters to encounter hens. On the other hand, longer hunting hours do not seem to lead to higher hen kills in the spring based on the experience of states with all-day spring hunting, as long as the season does not open too early in the year. mining the viability of all-day spring hunting. Wildlife agencies have expanded spring hunting opportunities the last 30 years through increased bag limits, season lengths and daily hunting hours. Recently, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has: increased the length of the spring season so that it now closes on May 31; increased the bag limit with the establishment of the second gobbler license; established opportunity for mentored youth hunters under the age of 12 to pursue spring gobblers; and provided a special youth spring gobbler hunting day to provide more opportunity for hunters. When wild turkey populations show declining trends wildlife managers typically look to the fall season for reductions in opportunity and harvest of hens to compensate for those declines. The paradigm is slowly changing in the states that limit hunting hours. Some turkey hunters travel around the
