AdAms — While in the training school each cadet would look to see if he or she had a Field Note when the new game news arrived. My name hadn’t appeared until the March issue, when WCO Finnegan told the story of my coffee accident inside his vehicle while on field training assignment. My coffee spilling incident got a lot of laughs, but I hadn’t heard anything about it since then. Recently, though, I was at HTE instructor training and reminded of that incident yet again. My deputies, Hal Heagey and Joe Webb, decided to present me with a “welcoming” gift in front of about 50 instructors. A gift they claimed would keep my coffee from going down the “wrong pipe.” When they handed me a sippie cup with a plastic straw, I was forced to tell the story to everyone in the room. — WCO Kevin anDersOn, littlestOWn

Can’t Escape a Good Field Note

Allegheny — I was responding to a nuisance bear call at a residence, and when I arrived local police officers were there to assist. The bear ran down some nearby railroad tracks, and the officers said they knew how to access the tracks from our location. As we drove down a trail along the train tracks the police cruiser, while attempting to turn around, got stuck against the train tracks. As the officer called in to shut the railroad down, so his car wouldn’t get destroyed by an oncoming train, the other officer and I attempted to push the vehicle away from the tracks. Eventually, we were able to free the car and get back onto the road. I asked if either of the officers read game news, and when one of them said he did, I told him that’s all I wanted to know. — WCO Dan Puhala, Pittsburgh

york — The first week in my new district I spent a lot of time trying to learn the roads and popular hunting areas. My efforts were somewhat hampered by recent bridge constructions, though, and if I had a GPS unit that understood when I told it the bridge was closed, I’d have been okay. Another Option

When my friend, Matt, took his son, Ben, out for the youth gobbler hunt, he set up his Iphone on a tripod to try and catch some of the day’s action. They had a gobbler coming in, so Matt reached over and hit what he thought was the record button. To Matt’s surprise, the thing started blaring music. As Matt got it shut off, Ben whispered, “Shut that thing off and stick it in your pocket.” Despite the ruckus, Ben ended up shooting a fine longbeard, and Matt learned to leave his toys at home. — lMO geOrge J. New Technology

LMO Louie Mosier and I were walking across a food plot just off of Rt. 144 on SGL 100 to admire the nice “catch” of clover resulting from our seeding last year. “What are these doing here?” I said as I reached down to pick up a matched set of shed elk antlers. We have seen increasing numbers of elk crossing the West Branch of the Susquehanna River onto SGL 100. Also, Route 144 is part of the Elk Scenic Highway and it’s now possible to see elk in that area as a result of our habitat enhancement program. — lMO Walter e. bOWDen, sinneMahOning
