Five Generations, One Gun

RoM THe eARLIesT time I can remember I was told stories of the hunt. Dad was the oldest of eight children, six boys and two girls, in a rural family from Ralston. Hunting and fishing were not only forms of recreation but necessities while they were growing up, and continued into the boys’ adulthoods. Grandpa’s birthday was always celebrated near Thanksgiving and, when the family gathered, those stories resurfaced. The grandsons gathered to hear the stories in anticipation of being old enough to join in those hunting adventures and continue the tradition. Dad had only four guns — two centerfire rifles, a .22 and an old double barrel shotgun with hammers with which he did most of his hunting. He kept them in a locked cabinet with a glass front, and I can remember standing and admiring those guns as a child, longing for the day when I would be able to join him in the field. Dad worked until noon on saturdays, but when he got home he’d head to the forest or fields. When he carried the shotgun I would anxiously await his return, because it usually meant getting some pheasant or grouse feathers, or a rabbit or squirrel tail from his bag. When I reached the age of 10 Dad took me along. I wasn’t old enough for a license or to carry a gun, of course, but I loved tagging
along. We didn’t have a dog and it soon became evident that besides teaching me the basics of the hunt, I was to fill in for the missing dog. He would say, “Go around that tree and chase the squirrel back to this side.” The animal would present Dad with a shot and I would retrieve the game; Dad seldom missed. In 1959 I turned 12, and it felt like it had taken forever to reach the age when I could hunt. Dad taught me how to use his .22 and we went hunting. We mostly hunted squirrels at first, and I managed to bag a few that year. I missed a rabbit sitting, but at least chased it out for Dad to get it. Dad borrowed a pump shotgun from my Uncle Bob near the end of that season, but I was still too small to handle the double barreled shotgun. The next year, Merle Bloom, a friend of Dad’s, offered to let me use a Mossberg .410 bolt action shotgun. It might as well have been a single-shot, as I am left handed. However, I did manage to harvest my first pheasant with the gun, with Grandpa and Uncle Louie watching. My first deer, an 8-point buck, was taken with the .410 using slugs, but still no rabbit. I had several opportunities for the cottontails but just could not connect. At 14 I was still planning on using the .410, but when we went to get our licenses the night before the season at our favorite sporting goods store Dad noticed a sign over the gun rack indicating special prices on new Remington 870s. Dad looked the guns over, selected
