of my arrow that had snapped off. The trail was easy to follow, and after another 20 yards or so we spotted the deer. My father cautioned me to approach slowly, just in case. As we got closer and the rack became more obvious, my father sprinted to the downed deer repeatedly yelling, “Look at that buck! Look at that buck!” The buck was larger than I imagined. He was an 11-point with a 20-inch spread and weighed a field-dressed 195 pounds. There were a lot of photos, high fives and phone calls that evening. It wasn’t long after we found him that I realized I would have to go back on a promise to my wife. She is from a nonhunting family and when we got married

I promised to never have a mounted deer in the house. We both enjoy venison and I am definitely not a trophy hunter, but I knew this deer was special and she gratefully allowed me to have a mount done. An official Pope and Young scorer measured my buck at a net 142-3/8 inches and is ranked 200 in the 2012 Pennsylvania Big Game Records book; not bad for my first archery buck. It was truly a buck of a lifetime and I was so thankful to have had the opportunity to harvest it and to be able to share it with my family and friends. I was also thankful that my mother makes some pretty good Chinese food, or so I hear. 

What does it take to shoot a record book buck?
IT TAKES a minimum 125 inches for a typical whitetail taken with a bow to make the Pope & Young Club, and a minimum 115 to make the Pennsylvania state records. Deer taken with a crossbow can be entered in the state records, but not in the Pope & Young Club records. If you harvest a buck this fall that you think might make Pennsylvania’s record book (115 B&C Club points for archery typical; 135 archery nontypical; 140 typical with a firearm; and 160 nontypical with a firearm), after a 60-day drying period, contact an official B&C Club or P&Y Club measurer to have your rack scored. A list of measurers can be found on both clubs’ websites. A copy of the official score sheet then needs to be sent to: Pennsylvania Big Game Records, PA Game Commission, 2001 Elmerton Ave., Harrisburg, PA 17110-9797.
