Dauphin — A bear had been tearing up  the greens of a golf course near my house,  looking  for  grubs.  At  the  same  time,  a  chipmunk was burrowing under my patio.  I set my bear trap at the golf course and  baited it with about 50 pounds of doughnuts donated by the local Weis market. I  also set up a small box trap on my patio  for the chipmunk and baited it with a dab  of  peanut  butter  on  a  cracker.  The  next  morning, the box trap was squashed flat as  a pancake and the peanut butter cracker  was gone. When I checked the bear trap,  I discovered a chipmunk nibbling on my  doughnuts,  with  no  sign  of  the  bear.  I  hope  the  bear  enjoyed  his  peanut  butter  cracker as much as the chipmunk enjoyed  the doughnuts. —WCO Mike DOherty, Dauphin

The Best Laid Plans . . .

armSTrong — WCO  Gary  Fujak  and  I  were  doing  our  annual  combination  squirrel  and  archery  deer  hunt  together  in  my  district  when  I  got  lucky  and  got  five  squirrels,  but  Gary  bagged  only  one.  A  fine  morning  out  hunting  makes  for  a  big appetite, so we went to a restaurant for  lunch and, of course, the waitress wanted  to know how the local “game warden” had  made out hunting. Before I could open my  mouth to answer Gary blurted out, “We got  six squirrels,” and I got a smug look as he  continued to stuff his face with a cheeseburger.  Technically,  he  was  right,  and  I  appreciated the lesson so much that later,  after I got skunked while archery hunting  and Gary got a doe, I told everyone how  “we” got a deer. — WCO rOD burnS, kittanning FayeTTe — I received a call about an owl  stuck  in  a  farmer’s  corncrib.  Upon  arriving, I noticed the great horned owl flying  around inside the crib, unable to find the  small  opening  to  gain  its  freedom.  With  some help from the farmer, and a couple  of 20-foot ladders, I was able to get inside  and grab the owl and release it. — WCO ChriS bergMan, belle VernOn
