order equipment, conduct Basic Archery Instructor trainings and carry
out their programs in class. Each school
that enrolls in the program receives a
$1,500 grant from the agency, money
that is allocated to the agency through
Pitman-Robertson grants. Schools then
work to raise the remaining $1,600 to
purchase an equipment kit, which contains compound bows, targets, aluminum arrows, arrow curtains and more.
With equipment in hand and successful
completion of the BAI course, teachers
are set to begin teaching their young
archers.
Growth in
Tournaments
NASP offers
a basic introduction to archery
and once students
learn to shoot in
physical education,
they quickly develop the confidence
and foundational
skills necessary to
become a lifelong
archer. Students,
parents and teachers often contact the agency looking
for more opportunities to shoot and
improve their skills. One such opportunity the Game Commission provides
them is the annual Pennsylvania
NASP state tournament. For the past
three years, the agency has coordinated
a one-day event where students come
to compete among their peers. Many
schools form teams and clubs that meet
after school prior to the tournament
to practice. This is a big event that
many students now look forward to
year after year.

The 2013 Pennsylvania State NASP
Tournament was once again a banner
event for the students to attend. This
year, a record-breaking 895 students
registered from 30 different schools and
817 participated. That’s 323 students
more than in 2012! This increase
in participants required a significant
tournament “makeover” as the number of lanes on the shooting range was
doubled and more volunteers were
recruited to accommodate student archers. More than 70 agency personnel
and another 40 volunteers representing
various organizations were onsite
to help students
throughout the
tournament. This
year, the event was
sponsored by Cabela’s and Lancaster Archery Supply,
both of which were
in attendance and
shared information
with students.
After shooting, students visited the annual
“Shooter’s Expo,”
set up to offer opportunities to explore
hunting and other outdoor activities.
Students shot 3D targets, casted fishing
rods and more as they waited for the
awards ceremony at the end of the day.
During the awards ceremony, the
top five male and female shooters and
the top three teams overall were recognized. This year’s top shots were Gabbi
Kosek and Nicholas Myers, both with
top scores of 288. Top schools included
Halifax Area High School, Montrose Middle School and New Castle
Christian Academy in the Elementary
