Tightrope Buck How a sure-footed buck changed a hunter's luck. By Daryl R. Clair I WAS JUST two and a half months into retirement, with the freedom to hunt whenever I wanted - for the most part - and I believed this would finally be the year I would take a wallhanger with my bow. No more scrambling to get in a rare after-work hunt or getting up early on Saturday, my only "sleep-in day," to compete with all the other weekend-only hunters. This was definitely going to be "the year." Having the chance to hunt property in Wildlife Management Unit 2B, I was able to get in some advance buck scouting, thanks to the early archery doe season. The opening Saturday of the 2012 season fueled my hopes for 14 what I was sure would go down as my best hunting year ever. At 7:15 a.m. I spotted a deer moving through thick cover as it headed directly for my stand. I attached my release to the bow string and waited for the right moment to draw on the approaching deer. As I fought nerves and a pounding heart, I watched in amazement as a large-racked 8-point emerged from behind a thicket and continued on its path toward me. The buck eventually stopped broadside about 10 yards from me.
