tools necessary to help in such situations.
In preparing for this annual trip, I
included in my large pack a first-aid kit.
How thankful I am that I did!
I quickly pulled the kit from my pack
and began to administer first aid to stop
the bleeding.
Dad was fully cognizant of what was
going on, but still was unaware of what
hit him. The detached limb, commonly
called a widowmaker, broke into three
pieces upon impact with Dad's head.
We were able to stop the bleeding,
get a bandage on, and quickly get back
to the truck.
This incident taught me some valuable lessons I truly feel compelled to share
with fellow hunters.
First, always be aware of what is above
you. Never assume your position is safe. I
have spent countless hours in the woods
through the years and have never really
given this much attention until now.
Since the fall of 2013, my perspective
has really changed. I am now amazed at
how many unstable "widowmakers" are
out there in the woods.
This incident has made me reconsider
where I stop to call, where I set up a
tree stand, or where I decide to "teach
a lesson!"

Second, always carry a first-aid kit
with you. Sometimes, especially in familiar surroundings, we forget that being
outdoors can present danger, whether
using broadheads or knives, or traveling paths with sharp rocks and broken
branches. A good first-aid kit can literally
mean the difference between you returning home or not.
First-aid kits are generally inexpensive
and can be carried quite easily. I recommend doing some research to see what
things you should include in your kit.
The Internet is a valuable resource; it
has many examples of good survival and
medical kits.
Finally, take the time to get some
type of first-aid training. These classes
are often inexpensive - sometimes free
- and can really help when faced with a
traumatic experience afield.
Since our incident, I have taken the
time to take such a class.
I hope I will be able make that annual
journey back to the Pennsylvania mountains time and again to share precious
times with the ones I love.
While our dreams are filled with large
flocks of turkeys on every oak flat, our
minds will never forget the day when
we came face to face with one of Penn's
Woods' widowmakers.
