years. So our ear tags have had four
digits for a very long time.
But, try as we might, we could only
make out those three numbers on the
ear tag from the picture.
We searched the database. There
were six deer that had ear tags ending
in 151, going back to 2003. Only two
of them were female.
We were getting close but something wasn't quite right. The ear tags
we've been using are silver, and the
tag in the photo clearly was not silver.
The first large-scale study that
kicked off the research program used
brown ear tags, but that study occurred
in 2001.
Could this really be a deer from
that study?
Dusting off the 13-year-old database,
we found her. Back then, she was an
8.6-pound fawn in the Quehanna Wild
Area. Our last contact with her was
in February 2002, when her telemetry
collar fell off as it was designed to do.
All these years later, she was photographed in the very same area and
has probably given birth to more than
20 fawns. Given what we know about
deer survival rates in Pennsylvania,
only 3 percent of does reach the age
of 13.
But this is not the only deer to reach
double-digit age in the Quehanna Wild
Area, a more than 48,000-acre wildlife
area in Cameron, Clearfield and Elk
counties.
The doe shared the woods with another deer elder, at least for a few years.
In 2007, a 10½-year-old buck sporting a 10-point rack was harvested
within 10 miles of where the trailcamera doe likely lived her entire life.
The buck is the oldest documented
buck harvested in Pennsylvania.
And he almost lived to see another
season, too. It wasn't until 4 p.m. -
the final hour of the final day of the
2007 firearms deer season - that he
was taken.
Given that some time has passed
since the taking of the trail-camera
photo, it's possible the doe with tag 151
also has met her match by now.
But I wouldn't bet on it.
Deer in the Quehanna Wild Area
are pretty good at beating the odds.
