Without these three critical references, traditional archers have to develop
their own checks.
That's why shooting traditional bows
often is referred to as instinctive.
By shooting the bow over and over,
you will develop muscle memory. Basically, your body will tell you when you've
drawn the bow to the proper anchor
point. Drawing to the same point each
time equates to consistent shooting.
Also, repetitive shooting allows you to
learn how to aim off your arrow.
Because you don't have a sight, you've
got to develop your own aiming system,
using the arrow as your guide.
After a while, you'll instinctively
feel when you're in the proper position
to make a shot that delivers your arrow
where you want it.
Wert warns that even the mostseasoned traditional archers, who have
honed their shooting instincts to a ra-

zor's edge, will never achieve perfection.
Because the equipment doesn't have the
built-in references of compounds, it is
possible on every shot to make a mistake.
To draw just a hair longer or shorter,
or to have your head just slightly out of
position when you take aim, can throw
off a shot.
"In hunting situations, at the moment
of truth, traditional shooters tend to stop
their draw short," Wert said. "That's
going to affect accuracy. There are no
traditional bowhunters, who have been
hunting for more than a couple years,
who don't have a lot of stories about
misses."
One of the many challenges of shooting a traditional bow is that you have to
hold the full draw weight on your fingers
at full draw. There is no let-off and you
won't be using a mechanical release.
Consider this, a compound-bow
hunter shooting a 70-pound bow with
80-percent let-off holds 14 pounds at
full draw. The archer shooting
a 40-pound recurve holds all 40
pounds - assuming they have
at least a 28-inch draw length.
(Someone shooting that same
bow, but only pulling it 26 inches
would hold less than 40 pounds at
full draw, because the limbs won't
be fully loaded.)
So you can't think about compound weights when you go looking for a recurve or longbow.
Accept the fact that you aren't
going to pull anywhere close to the
same weight. For whitetails, Wert
recommends traditional bowhunters shoot bows with draw weights
