The night before buck season, I ran
a dry patch through the bore of the
Winchester. All my clothes were on the
chair next to the bed, sheath knife
on the belt, silvertips in the jacket
pocket. I was in bed by 11 p.m. and still
awake when my mother went down to
start breakfast. I dressed and was close
behind.
A crock of buckwheat batter made
with yeast was prepared the night
before season. The bubbly batter was
ladled on the pancake griddle in
dinner plate-sized portions. Country
sausage, loaded with butcher pepper and
just a touch of cayenne, gave your
stomach some real substance on which to
work. About the time the first pancakes
were ready, family and extended family
would filter in. When the second
pot of coffee in the blue-enamel
pot was reaching bottom, my dad
would pick up his coat and open
the door. No need for conversation;
everyone followed into the cars for the
half-hour drive to
the area we always
hunted.

A quick discussion as to plans for the
day was really unnecessary. The crew had
hunted together for years and everyone
had his favorite spot. In a few years, I also
would have mine.
My dad and I were sitting at the
top of what I thought of as our ravine.
By mid-morning, the heavy breakfast
and sleepless night began to take their
toll.
Fighting off sleep, I saw the deer
before my dad. A doe and a spike
were just standing there at 15 yards.
When I shot, the buck went down
so fast that all Dad saw was the
doe. He had no idea what had happened.
The buck had 8-inch spikes that
curved like a real rack. Years later, I
shot a 12-point with a 24-inch spread,
but I was not nearly as proud as I was of
that spike.
I planned to be completely blasé about
my success as in, "Oh yeah, I got one."
That lasted only until we got the buck
out to the road and I saw the first member
of our crew.
"I got one, I got one!" I yelled.
So much for the casual approach.
It sure would be nice to be able to
eat those buckwheat cakes and sausage
again without the guilt that would
accompany the feast. The shotgun
and the .30-30 are still around, though
neither has seen action for years. Every
year, I empty the gun safe, inspect all the
guns, wipe them all with a silicone cloth
and put them away. Those two go in the
back corner after an appropriate stroll
down memory lane.
