each time I hid from her, as she learned
to stay with Dad, and I learned to trust
that she would not wander away.
It wasn't long before Katniss was
making the full 3-mile loop through
"Greenland," as the game lands is known,
without ever being on a leash. And, 40
days after her adoption, Katniss made
her first retrieve of a pheasant at a local
shooting grounds. But that's a story for a
different article.
Because of these almost daily treks
through the game lands, I became aware
of several different flocks of turkeys that
we'd bump into along the route, and I
began to see a pattern as to which fields
the flocks were using on a regular basis.
Also, during the month of April, I
noticed that "prescribed burn" notices
had been posted along our usual route,
meaning the home range of a few of those
flocks was about to experience a bit of an
adjustment.
I wondered how that would affect my
plans to hunt those gobblers in the com10
ing turkey season.
In the Spring 2014 edition of the National Wild Turkey Federation's Pennsylvania Turkey Talk, my friend Bob Eriksen
had an informative article on prescribed
burns, and I took particular notice of a
quote attributed to the legendary Ned
Smith, who remarked how quickly animal life returned to burned areas.
I read the article multiple times with
great interest, knowing an area I wanted
to hunt was most likely going to experience a burn very soon.
Throughout the month of April the
various conditions required to permit the
burn to occur never came together, and
April turned to May, and the 2014 spring
turkey season was upon us.
My son-in-law Rob and I spent the
first day of the spring turkey season on
State Game Lands 210, and heard a few
birds gobbling early in the day, but we
had no luck calling any into shotgun
range.
I was looking forward to returning
later in the week, since I was on vacation
