al application was started on about 600
acres. Different seed mixes were used
for areas with full and partial sun and
to see which species would establish.
In 2011, an additional 500 acres
were started on adjacent National Park
Service lands. The remaining areas
were seeded - and some others received
touch-ups - in 2012.
"Unlike the grassland of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center, the Game
Commission and the National Park
Service wanted their forestland back,"
Lansing said, "so in addition to warmseason grasses, we seeded pitch pine,
white pine, sumacs, choke cherry, and
in some small test areas, we planted
common blackberry and maple-leaf
viburnum to see if they would take.
"We were providing a kick-start for
the plants to take hold, and then letting nature do the rest of the work,"
Lansing explained. "It wasn't enough
to just add seed."
Revegetating the Blue Mountain's north
slope has been a challenge from the
drawing board forward.

As mentioned, one of the first challenges was raising the soil pH, which
was as low as 4 in some areas. (Seven
is neutral on the pH scale.) Then,
nutrients are added because most were
lost when the mountain lost its topsoil.
"Where we could, we added organics
to help retain moisture and build a soil
ecosystem, which provides sustainable
cycling of nutrients for plants," Lansing
said. "Then, we chose our plants wisely.
They had to be native to the area and
able to survive the harsh conditions."
This ongoing effort aims to build an
ecosystem that will keep the mountain's metals capped in the soil and
provide groundcover to prevent erosion and support wildlife.
"Birch and aspen took off after we
added limestone and fertilizer, but
both are metal up-takers," Lansing
noted. "So we are conducting tests
and evaluating if the birch forest will
go through natural succession into a
