shot at a legal buck.
One evening, a nice legal buck
appeared out of nowhere from behind
us and walked within 5 yards.
Watching from above, I wasn't able to
alert Dad the buck got by us, but I saw
him watching it as it moved farther and
farther away.
Dad never picked up his crossbow,
and afterward I asked him why he didn't
shoot. He replied that he couldn't see any
brow tines on it. I had to tell him that
the antler restrictions had been changed
to "three up" on one side the prior year.
We shared a few laughs and I kidded him
about becoming a trophy hunter.
Of course, last season, Dad's good
luck returned, and his earlier prediction
came true.

Hunting with my dad has given
me a lifetime of great memories I will
cherish forever. Dad started taking me
hunting with him when I was old enough
to walk, and while I was in school, I
McCarl, with the 9-point he took at age 91.
looked forward to weekends when I could
go with him and take the beagle out for
rabbits, or go sit for squirrels.
I would always carry the game in my
hunting coat, which was two sizes too
big - but it was mine.
I'm sure that on several occasions I
cost my dad a deer because I couldn't
keep still, or I got cold and he had to
take me back to the car to get warm. To
him, though, it never seemed to matter.
And I saw him make some amazing
shots.
One time while rabbit hunting, he
shot at a running bunny the dog had
circled and, at the shot, a grouse flushed.
He got the grouse and the rabbit. Not
many people can say they had done that.
When I reached my 30s, I got to start
living my childhood dream of traveling
to hunt big game. I made several trips to
the Rocky Mountain states, Alaska and
British Columbia, and took some great
trophies that decorate my game room.
I owe it all to Dad, for the way he
taught me to hunt and to respect game
and outdoors.

I hope that there will
be many more years of
enjoyment hunting with
my dad, and even though
he said "at age 95 he would
kill a buck and then hang
it up," he already is making
plans for future years.
And if the good Lord is
willing, come October, we
will be sitting in our tree
stands waiting for a buck
to walk into range of Dad's
crossbow.
Who knows, maybe he
will be out there when he's
100.
