"Heck no," Gary replied, "This is a
perfect day for running rabbits and the
limit is four each. It's your turn!"
While searching for another rabbit,
amid the briars, I convinced Gary that I
didn't fully understand his method and
had only seen and heard him briefly
during the chase, thereby explaining
my failure to ambush the rabbit at the
water tank, and save him a half-mile. I
told him I'd need one more demo chase.
I almost double-dog dared him to do
it again, but held my tongue.
To sweeten the deal, I tossed in an
offer of all the rabbits that we might bag.
He went for it and I uncrossed my
fingers and toes.
Pay Attention!
Following a brief rest for his lungs
to stop hurting and the rubberyness in
his legs to subside, he agreed to give me
another lesson in the fine art of tonguing
bunnies, but only if I swore to make
every effort to bag the rabbit at the very
first opportunity.
"By the way," I asked, "How come
you make so many different barks on
the trail?"
"Oh, that's part of tricking 'em," he
replied. "The rabbits think a whole pack
of dogs is on their trail. "Keeps 'em
circling back to where you jumped 'em;
looking for a hole to duck into."
"Sure had Mrs. Ogline convinced,"
I muttered.
"Huh." he asked.
"Oh, nothin'," I said.
"You're doggone good at it, too,"
I told him. "You gotta be the best. In
fact, I'll bet there isn't anybody within
20 miles that can beat you at runnin'
bunnies."
His chest swelled and a proud grin
etched his face. "Well, OK, one more

time. But then it's your turn for sure."
I was glad to slide out of that. Within
seconds another rabbit flushed from a
blackberry tangle and Gary scratched
off in full voice.
This time when he called out, "arff,
arrrrff, he's headed for the water tank,
arrrrrrff," I swallowed my pride and
legged it to the brushy hillside above
the old wooden tank on stilts.
Somehow, in spite of a minor delay,
I managed to arrive in time to bust the
rabbit with a load of No. 6s and save
Gary some additional trail work. He
appreciated it, too, and said so between
panting fits.
He was dog tired.
That minor delay enabled an
encounter with my buddy Billy's dad,
Shimer - his real name, honest - who'd
stopped his old Ford station wagon to
ask why I was hurrying. "Just trying to
