head off a rabbit," I told him as Gary's
yipp, yipp, yipp, yowlll reached his ears.
"Oh, got a new dog did ya?" he
asked.
"Uh, yeaaaaahh, I guess you can say
that," I replied, and took off on a dead
run to ambush the rabbit, but, more
importantly, to escape Shimer before
my dog called out ambush instructions.
I See What You're Doing
Gary was truly proud to have two
rabbits in the bag and even more happy
that this trail had taken only
half the time and exertion
of our first.
"If you
rest a little,
do ya think
you could do that
again?" I asked. "I
think I'm getting the
hang of it. I just have
to see it again, and I
promise you can have
all the rabbits."
I threw in a candy bar, too.
"Yeah, OK, one
more time," Gary
agreed. "But you
head 'em off as quick
as you can, promise?"
My OK was interrupted by another
loud and excited Owllll, yow, yow,
yow, yowll, as Gary streaked off, sight
chasing a rabbit, one of two that had
burst out of the brush nearly at our feet
while we spoke.
Special Breed
By now I was convinced Gary was
the best rabbit dog that ever lived, bar
none. A sudden bang from Gary's
20-gauge single-barrel interrupted my
appreciative thoughts.

"Got one of 'em," he yelled. "Keep
watchin'; I'll bring the other around."
Now I ask you, how many dogs
can do that, bag one and trail another
simultaneously?
By the time he yelled that this one
was headed for the old swinging bridge,
his bark was growing weaker, and I
realized that this dog had had his day.
Everyone does, you know.
When he staggered up to the sight of our
third kill, he was one tired puppy, making it
easier for me to convince him
that I had chores to do
at home and really did
have to go. "You get all
the rabbits, though," I
reminded him.
As we spoke I
instinctively tried to
pat him on the head
and scratch his ears,
but he ducked and
yelled, "Hey, quit it!"
OK, I'll confess. I
was having thoughts
about working up a
pedigree for him. A
"dog" of such talents
would be legendary
and the pups priceless.
Legend
Our hunt had been a howling success.
I'll bet successive generation sof rabbits
in that area have heard the story of the
gun-totin' beagle in the Woolrich coat.
Gary's gotta be a legend of sorts in
the rabbit world.
Recently at our 30-year high school
class reunion, I asked Gary, now a
successful jeweler, if he remembered our
unique rabbit hunt.
He umphed and headed to the bar for
another Ovaltine.
