A Living Forest
IKING UP Detweiler Run in northern Huntingdon County's Rothrock
State Forest, I reveled in the spring morning. The sky was deep blue, the
air fresh and fragrant. Shadbush bloomed white, and soft maples put forth red
flowers. Tiny pale leaves adorned the tulip trees, and buds swelled on oaks.
I trained my binoculars on a male Bachman's warbler with its black bib and
yellow breast, and on a black-throated blue warbler with its ebony face and
blue-gray back, in the company of a plain brown female.
The trail led past towering pines and hemlocks, remnants of
an earlier forest, spared by loggers in the late 19th century. (It's
said a boiler blew up on a log-hauling steam engine, causing
timbering operations to cease, and the state bought the land
before the work resumed.) The hemlocks had patchy foliage
that was paler green than the robust dark green of healthy
trees - evidence that the hemlock wooly adelgid, had arrived
to infest and endanger the trees.
I took a water bottle from my daypack and drank. My
eyes strayed to a flat area along the trail. It was about 40
feet wide by 60 feet long, covered with dry fallen leaves. A
favored camping spot, it had room for tents, and a well-used fire ring. I kicked
away some of the leaves. Beneath them, the soil held small black shards. The
flat was an old charcoal hearth.
After the early logging, another wave of exploitation had hit these woods:
cutting down the hardwoods, mostly chestnuts and oaks, to make charcoal. The
charcoal fed a burgeoning iron-making industry. Four miles from this spot was
Greenwood Furnace, which opened in 1834 and hit its peak of iron production
in the 1870s.
Once, this place had bustled with activity and rung with sound. Now all I could
hear was Detweiler Run chuckling in its rocky bed. Rothrock State Forest is
named for Joseph Rothrock, known as the "Father of Forestry" in Pennsylvania,
a leader in the movement to buy land from lumber companies and create the
system of state forests now spread throughout the Keystone State.
Today, Rothrock State Forest is home to diverse tree and plant species, and
provides habitat for wildlife from the insects that those warblers were feeding
on, all the way up to deer and bears. It's a place where hikers and hunters can
find solitude and appreciate nature's beauty as well as its hopeful resilience.
That morning, I felt reassured that if and when those
adelgid-stricken hemlocks perished, other trees would
take their place. This forest would live on.
